Our new tour explores Cheshire and The Wirral and visits the places where scientific and social history have been made. In the 1800s William Hesketh Lever was creating new living spaces for his workers, great feats of engineering were taking place at Anderton, and in the 20th Century the scientists at Jodrell Bank built the world-famous Lovell Telescope.
Day 1 After collection from your home by taxi, we make our way northwards to our hotel in Chester, with suitable refreshment stops along the way.
Day 2 A day of discovery as we first travel to Anderton for a cruise including the famous boatlift, which was built in 1875 and provides a 50ft vertical link between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. Then on to Jodrell Bank, where we learn more about the Lovell Telescope, the ground-breaking scientific work which takes place here and explore the extensive gardens and arboretum.
Day 3 A free day to explore Chester. You might like to visit the halftimbered galleried shops of The Rows, walk the red sandstone city walls or visit the wonderful zoo.
Day 4 We drive into the Wirral and the excellent Ness Botanic Gardens on the Dee Estuary. We then travel to rural Wirral and the village of Thornton Hough, which in 1889 became a project for William Hesketh Lever who built a school, orphanage and church. Lastly, Port Sunlight, the idyllic garden village built for the Sunlight Soap factory workers and home to the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
