Monschau is the cultural centre of the Eifel mountain region and one of the most popular locations in the area. Its romantic half-timbered houses sit within ancient walls in an idyllic medieval town. This charming picture-postcard town is simply breath-taking.
Day 1 Following collection from home, we travel to Calais for the short sea crossing, arriving in Monschau and the Michel & Friends Hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 We spend the morning driving through the picturesque Eifel National Park, where the countryside is amazingly unspoilt, one of the most beautiful areas in Western Germany. Enjoy time at leisure in Bad Münstereifel, a charming town with timbered buildings and views over the area.
Day 3 This morning, visit Aachen, the ancient capital of the Frankish Empire, with a guided walking tour taking in the history of the city. Later, cross the border into Holland with a visit to medieval Valkenburg with its famous caves hewn into the rock creating a magical atmosphere.
Day 4 We head to the northern part of the Eifel National Park, to its largest lake, the tranquil Rursee, and enjoy a boat ride travelling along the length of the lake before continuing to the Ahr valley. The valley is one of Germany’s most prominent wine growing regions and we visit Ahweiler for free time, a visit to the wine museum and a tasting in Mayschoss.
Day 5 Begin the return journey via Calais and P&O Ferries to Dover before travelling on to the local area and home.
